Water polo is a challenging sport that requires both stamina and endurance! It is a competitive team sport played in the water between two teams.

The game consists of four quarters in which the two teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match.

Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Except for the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. Water polo is typically played in an all-deep pool meaning that players cannot touch the bottom.

Did you know?

The game was originally called “football-in-the-water,” and indeed it is more like association football and basketball than polo, the name of the sport coming from an earlier form of the game in which players rode barrels painted like horses and struck the ball with sticks.

Who is it for?

Unlike other LNC sport departments, the LNC Water Polo Team does not have a recreational department. The team is only training for elite performance. Therefore, hard work and discipline are key when it comes to following the demanding, well-structured training programmes.

The team is open to both males and females older than 7 y.o.

Why this sport?

Some mental benefits include:

  • Social skills
Playing team sports is a fantastic way for people to develop their social skills. Teamwork and good communication are vital for success in water polo.
  • Problem-solving
Another benefit of playing water polo is that it’s great at developing problem-solving. You’ll learn strategies to break down a defense and how to play with an extra player. Water polo involves having to think on your feet and find the best scenario straight away.

As for the physical benefits:

  • Power
Have you tried swimming carrying an extra 80kg from someone lying on you or holding you down? In case you haven’t worked it out, it’s difficult! And it’s a great way of building upper and lower body strength.
  • Works the core
With your legs otherwise occupied kicking to keep you afloat, changing your position comes from your core. Twists, turns and throws are all core-driven moves and will help define your abdominal muscles.
  • Weight loss
With all the swimming, jostling, throwing and kicking, it’s no shock that you can shift loads of calories in a water polo match. A survey found an average of 700 in an hour!!!
  • Increased Endurance & Cardiovascular Health
Water polo players can swim upwards of 5 kilometers in a game!

As if these weren’t enough, water polo is also easy on joints! The water acts as a cushion on joints and muscles, preventing injury and general aches and pains associated with traditional fitness
